Award winning Tomatoes
KINGS SUPPLY BOILERPLANT TO AWARD WINNING HERTFORDSHIRE TOMATO GROWER
The history of the King Group is very strongly tied to the history of British horticulture, which you can see in our ‘From the KING Archives – a brief history’. Hertfordshire based Guy & Wright Ltd., one of the UK’s foremost and respected tomato growers, have been valued clients for over 60 years. In recent years the two companies have collaborated on the concept of bio fuel for the nursery using anaerobic digestion.
This process uses waste vegetable matter, decomposing in an airtight vessel, in which anaerobic bugs digest the product resulting in Methane gas passing through the solution then gathering in the top of the cell. The Methane is then transported and used to fire Micro Turbines for electrical generation.
The anaerobic digestion process requires an initial heat source to gradually raise the temperature of the digestate. Heating is required for the first 12-16 weeks, after which the process is self-maintaining by re-circulating the water from the gas engine.
KINGS provide small packaged boiler units which are particularly suitable for this purpose and have worked with numberous clients throughout the UK on AD projects.
As John Fisher, KING’s AD specialist explains,
“we are familiar with the specific heating requirements of AD plants and understand the importance of reliable equipment as the biogas process begins”.
Like John Jones and his team at Guy & Wright, many of KING’S clients have achieved their ambition of producing electricity from vegetable waste. As John says “What could be better than using waste to give us warmth, electricity, Co2 to produce our new and revolutionary ECO TOM”. In 2009 John awarded the Grower of the Year award 2009 for Business Initiative. Today, using AD technology they can produce fantastic British tomatoes for 9 months of the year. It’s a Win-Win Situation for everyone!
